What this wasThe story

On 2 February 2025 the AI researcher Andrej Karpathy posted on X about a way of programming in which you “fully give in to the vibes” and “forget that the code even exists”: describe what you want to a language model, accept what it writes, and ask again when it breaks.

Merriam-Webster listed it as slang and trending in March 2025 and Collins chose it as word of the year in November 2025. By 2026 the arguments were about security holes in generated apps, studies finding developers slower than they believed, and open-source maintainers swamped by machine-written contributions.

Why it matteredWhat changed

It put a name to a change in who can make software, and both the people selling the change and the people worried by it kept using the name. That is why a dictionary chose it.
