What this wasThe story
Users fed selfies to Google's image model and asked for a grainy 1990s Bollywood-poster portrait in a chiffon saree. The output was consistent enough to be recognisable as a genre within days.
It is the clearest recent example of a global tool being localised by its users rather than its makers: the same model was available everywhere, and one country invented the thing it was for.
India became the largest market for the tool, which reached number one on both Indian app stores.
