OpenAI's March 2025 image model would redraw any photograph in the manner of a Studio Ghibli film, and within days people had put their wedding photos, their pets, their commutes and a great many news images through it. Sam Altman said publicly that the demand was melting the company's GPUs.
Reopened the AI-copyright fight in a form ordinary people could see rather than read about, and made 'Ghiblify' a verb.
