What this wasThe story

In October 2025, while the Trump administration described Portland as a war zone and sent National Guard troops, a protester stood outside the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in an inflatable frog costume. On 2 October a federal officer sprayed chemicals straight into the costume’s air vent, and the video travelled far beyond Portland.

Inflatable animals spread to rallies in other cities and to the No Kings marches later that month, and Willamette Week named the Frog one of its Portlanders of the Year for 2025.

Why it matteredWhat changed

The Trump administration was calling Portland a war zone to justify sending in troops. A frog bouncing at the gate was a reply that needed no argument, and other protesters copied it.
