The stock-photo smile the internet decided was hiding something, and the retired engineer behind it.
What this was
A silver-haired man smiles at the camera in dozens of stock photographs — at a desk, holding a mug, giving a thumbs up. The smile never reaches his eyes. From 2011 the images circulated with captions insisting the man was in quiet agony, and the character acquired a name: Hide the Pain Harold.
It first appeared in 2011, during the social era.
The man is real. András István Arató is a retired Hungarian electrical engineer who was photographed on holiday in Turkey, sold the shots into stock libraries, and then found himself the internet's picture of concealed misery. Rather than fight it, he acknowledged it, gave interviews, and became one of the very few meme subjects to take public ownership of the joke.
Arató has spoken at conferences, appeared in advertising as himself, and become an unlikely national figure in Hungary — in 2026 he was among the public's suggestions for the Hungarian presidency. His case is the standard counter-example to the assumption that becoming a meme is always something done to you.

Where it came from
There is no original upload to identify: this Moment did not begin as one. ViralWorld holds no copy of it either — what it was, when it appeared and what people called it is the record.
Nothing here is claimed to be the first publication of this Moment, because the first publication was not an upload. This Moment began as a photograph, not as a video.
