What this wasThe story
A silent overhead shot, a few ingredients, no measurements and no narration: a block of feta baked with tomatoes and stirred into pasta; leftover salmon flaked over rice with an ice cube on top and covered while it steams; pesto fried into eggs. Each takes under a minute to watch and produces a result that photographs well.
It is the first cooking format built entirely for a vertical feed, and it demonstrated a supply-chain effect no food media had managed before: the baked feta pasta trend caused actual feta shortages in Finnish and American supermarkets in early 2021. A recipe with no author, no publication and no measurements moved national grocery inventory.
FoodTok is now a distinct industry with its own creators, cookbook deals and brand economics, and a recognised set of problems around body image and the marketing of food to teenagers. The individual dishes date fast; the format has not.
Why it is here: it got out of its own corner of the internet fast · still being watched and quoted years later
