What this was
Brain rot names two things at once: a category of deliberately incoherent short-form content — surreal edits, AI-generated animals with invented Italian names, layered in-jokes that require hours of context to parse — and the state of mind produced by watching too much of it. The people who use the word are almost always describing themselves.
It first appeared in 2024, during short-form and streams.
It is a rare case of an audience naming its own condition, accurately, and then not stopping. The term is used as a self-diagnosis and as a genre label in the same sentence, which is why it works: it is simultaneously a criticism of the content and an endorsement. The Oxford English Dictionary named it word of the year for 2024, borrowing a phrase Thoreau had used in Walden in 1854.
The genre it names has continued to accelerate, largely through AI-generated video, and the word has been taken up by the same broadsheet commentary it originally satirised. Whether the effects it describes are real is now a live research question rather than a joke.

Behind the recordWhere it came from
There is no original to identify: this spread through many separate posts at once rather than from a first one. ViralWorld holds no copy of it either — what it was, when it spread and what people called it is the record.
Nothing here is claimed to be the first version of this, because research established there was not one — it appeared in many places at once.
Not established. This index only names a creator where the evidence supports it.
