One image, one looping sound and enormous zooming text — the meme format that predated the meme site.

The story

What this was

A phenomenon classified under dogs.

It first appeared in 2004, during early web, before YouTube.

It is the first mass platform for user-made memes, and it arrived before YouTube. The constraint was the point: three elements, no editing, no comments on the artefact itself — so the entire creative act was choosing what to juxtapose with what. The Picard Song was the site's breakout, and the community's word for a meme, "fad", predates the general use of the word meme online.

Goldberg announced in 2016 that the site could no longer fund its own hosting, and a catastrophic database failure in 2019 was widely reported as its death. It came back in 2020 with the archive intact and rebuilt for HTML5 — one of the very few sites of its generation to survive Flash's removal rather than be lost with it.

Behind the record

Where it came from

There is no original upload to identify: this Moment did not begin as one. ViralWorld holds no copy of it either — what it was, when it appeared and what people called it is the record.

Nothing here is claimed to be the first publication of this Moment, because the first publication was not an upload. This Moment began as a web page, not as a video. Originally published on ytmnd.com.
