What this wasThe story
KC Green drew a strip called On Fire for his webcomic Gunshow in 2013, in which a dog sits in a burning room saying it is fine and then burns. The first two panels spread on their own from September 2014, cropped away from the ending, and became the standard image for calm in the middle of catastrophe. The New York Times called it the meme 2016 deserved.
Why it matteredWhat changed
It became the standard picture of pretending not to notice a disaster, used by a political party against its rivals and kept as a mascot in a NASA mission control room. The joke people share is the first third of a comic that ends differently.

Why it is here: something the internet still knows by name · a moment that changed what the internet did next · copied, redrawn and reused until the original stopped mattering · it got out of its own corner of the internet fast · still being watched and quoted years later
This began as a web page, not as a video.
