What this wasThe story

On 12 May 2019 a 4chan thread asked for images that felt off. The next day somebody replied with a photograph of yellow carpet and fluorescent light and wrote that if you noclip out of reality you end up here. The picture turned out to have been taken in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on 12 June 2002 during a shop refit, and posted to a hobby shop's blog in 2003; the community that had built a mythology on it only established that in May 2024.

Why it matteredWhat changed

One photograph of an empty room and one anonymous reply describing it became a shared fictional world with wikis, games and a feature film. Nobody knew where the photograph had been taken for five years.

Why it is here: something the internet still knows by name · a moment that changed what the internet did next · it got out of its own corner of the internet fast · still being watched and quoted years later

Where it came fromWhat we know
