What this was
A car passes a highway sign reading ROAD WORK AHEAD. The driver, Drew Gooden, reads it aloud as a question — "Road work ahead? Uh, yeah, I sure hope it does" — deadpan, as though the sign had been asking whether the road works. His girlfriend filmed it on the way to a job in Arizona in March 2016.
It first appeared in 2016, during the platform era.
It is the most quoted Vine there is, and it is quoted rather than watched: the joke is entirely in the sentence, so it survives without the video. It became a standard reply, a call-and-response, and a shibboleth for a specific age cohort long after the six seconds themselves became unreachable.
Gooden built a commentary career on YouTube with millions of subscribers and won a Streamy for it, and is still introduced by the road sign. He told NBC News in 2022, at the fifth anniversary of Vine's shutdown, that the platform arrived exactly when he needed the confidence it gave him.
