The story

What this was

On 7 November 2020, four days after the US presidential election, Rudy Giuliani held a press conference about the Trump campaign's legal challenges. It took place in the parking lot of Four Seasons Total Landscaping, a small business in northeast Philadelphia, in front of the garage door. Reporters noted the neighbouring premises: an adult bookshop on one side, a crematorium on the other. While Giuliani was speaking, the Associated Press called Pennsylvania, and the election, for Joe Biden.

It first appeared in 2020, during short-form and streams.

The comedy is structural rather than partisan: the gap between the stakes of the event and the venue of the event, discovered live and in public, with the result arriving mid-sentence. It produced an instant and enormous volume of jokes across every platform, and the widely-shared theory that somebody had meant to book the Four Seasons hotel.

The landscaping company embraced it, sold merchandise, and became a minor Philadelphia landmark; a charity fun run and a concert have since been staged there. It is now the standard reference point for a plan that goes wrong in a way nobody could have designed.

Behind the record

Where it came from

There is no original upload to identify: this Moment did not begin as one. ViralWorld holds no copy of it either — what it was, when it appeared and what people called it is the record.

Nothing here is claimed to be the first publication of this Moment, because the first publication was not an upload. This Moment happened away from the internet before anybody put it online. Originally published on physical.
