What this wasThe story

In the Sanctuary of Mercy in Borja, Aragón, an unremarkable 1930 fresco of Christ crowned with thorns had been flaking off the damp wall. In August 2012 Cecilia Giménez, an eighty-one-year-old parishioner and untrained painter, set out to repair it. The result — a flat, wide-eyed, fur-like face — reached the international press within days and was promptly renamed Ecce Mono, Behold the Monkey.

Borja declined to undo it. Tens of thousands of visitors have since paid to see the fresco, an interpretation centre was built, and Giménez — who died in December 2025 — received a share of the proceeds. A village of five thousand people acquired a tourist industry from a botched afternoon's work.

Why it matteredWhat changed

An eighty-one-year-old parishioner’s attempt to restore a fresco of Christ made news round the world, and then multiplied the visitors to her town almost tenfold.
