A man alone on a hillside having a genuine experience, which the internet treated first as a joke and then as the point.

The story

What this was

Paul Vasquez films a double rainbow over the Yosemite Valley from his front yard in Mariposa County, California, and is overwhelmed by it — weeping, laughing, and asking what it means.

It first appeared in 2010, during the social era. The copy this index knows about is on YouTube.

He posted it the day he shot it and almost nobody watched. It went viral six months later, on 3 July 2010, when Jimmy Kimmel tweeted it as the funniest video in the world — which is a fair description of how it was received and not of what it is.

The Gregory Brothers made an auto-tuned version; it appeared in adverts and films. Vasquez appeared on Kimmel’s show and remained a public figure until his death in May 2020.
