The story

What this was

Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched Dogecoin on 6 December 2013 to mock cryptocurrency speculation, using Kabosu the shiba inu from the doge meme as its face. A million people visited the site in the first month. The joke funded the Jamaican bobsled team, wells in Kenya and a NASCAR car, and by May 2021 the parody was notionally worth more than eighty-five billion dollars.

It first appeared in 2013, during the social era.

Behind the record

Where it came from

There is no original to identify: this spread through many separate posts at once rather than from a first one. ViralWorld holds no copy of it either — what it was, when it spread and what people called it is the record.

Nothing here is claimed to be the first version of this, because research established there was not one — it appeared in many places at once.

Not established. This index only names a creator where the evidence supports it.
