What this wasThe story
A seven-year-old boy sits in the back of a car, coming round from a general anaesthetic after having a tooth removed, and asks his father whether this is real life and whether it is going to be forever.
The family monetised it as YouTube partners, sold merchandise, donated some proceeds to dental charities, and auctioned an NFT in 2021 for about $13,500 towards the boys’ tuition. The exploitation question was raised at the time and has not gone away; the father has said the family’s experience of it was positive.
Why it matteredWhat changed
It set off the first wide argument about whether a parent should publish a child at their most confused, and the family answered it in public for years. “Is this real life?” is still the line people reach for when something stops making sense.
