Gaby Rasson coined cheugy at a Beverly Hills high school in 2013 for people who were just off trend — mom jeans, live laugh love, Minion memes. It sat in Urban Dictionary until a TikTok in March 2021 got a hundred thousand likes, and then Taylor Lorenz wrote it up in the New York Times, which reached far more people than the video had. The American Dialect Society made it 2021's informal word of the year.
