The story

What this was

A meme classified under children.

It first appeared in 2019, during the platform era.

It is the last great surprise a major franchise managed to keep, and the reaction was correspondingly enormous — a still of a small creature holding a cup of soup became one of the most reproduced reaction images of 2020. It also demonstrated something Disney had been reluctant to accept: that withholding merchandise until after a reveal costs money in the short term and buys something advertising cannot.

The merchandising catch-up became its own story, since there were no toys to sell at Christmas. The character's real name, Grogu, arrived in late 2020 and never displaced the meme name in general use. Baby Yoda is the clearest recent case of an audience naming a character and the rights holder losing that argument permanently.

Behind the record

Where it came from

There is no original upload to identify: this Moment did not begin as one. ViralWorld holds no copy of it either — what it was, when it appeared and what people called it is the record.

Nothing here is claimed to be the first publication of this Moment, because the first publication was not an upload. This Moment was released commercially before the internet carried it. Originally published on commercial-release.
