What this wasThe story
On 8 April 2012, Oklahoma City station KFOR-TV interviewed Kimberly Wilkins outside a burning apartment complex. She describes waking up, smelling smoke, running out — and then, on being asked about the smoke, delivers the line: I got bronchitis. Ain't nobody got time for that. The timing is perfect and entirely unrehearsed.
Wilkins, as Sweet Brown, appeared on national television, took a cameo in a Tyler Perry film delivering the line, and became the subject of an autotune remix in the pattern the Bed Intruder Song had set. It also renewed an uncomfortable argument, still unresolved, about which people get turned into memes by American local news and why.
Why it matteredWhat changed
A woman describing how she escaped a fire on local television gave the internet a phrase for dismissing anything at all. Her attempt to stop a song built on her words, by suing the shop that sold it, was dismissed.
