A Brazilian sertanejo song that footballers danced to after goals until it was number one in twenty countries.
What this was
A simple accordion-led sertanejo track with an unstoppable chorus — nossa, nossa, assim você me mata — recorded by Michel Teló and released in July 2011. It was already known in Brazil's northeast in earlier versions; Teló's is the one that left the country, and it left it through football, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar performed the dance as goal celebrations.
It first appeared in 2011, during the social era. A surviving copy is on YouTube.
It is the clearest case of a song going global through a channel that had nothing to do with music: a goal celebration seen by a worldwide television audience, repeated by other players, and then looked up. Within months it was number one in more than twenty countries and the sixth best-selling single in the world for 2012.
The authorship turned out to be more complicated than the credits: in February 2012 it emerged that three students from Paraíba had written the verses the song was built on, and a co-authorship agreement followed — an unusually well-documented case of a viral hit's origins being corrected in public.
